SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOURS AT OAK PARK PS

Context
We believe that the school should be a happy learning environment which meets the needs of all students at all levels of their school life.
  • All individuals are valued and treated with respect
  • Students are expected to be able to work in a secure environment without intimidation where they are able to develop their talents, interests and ambitions
  • Parents expect that their children will be educated in a secure environment in which care, courtesy and respect for the rights and property of others is encouraged
  • Teachers expect to be able to teach in an atmosphere of order and co-operation
All students and staff have;
  • The right to be safe
  • The right to be treated with respect
  • The right to work and play without interference

School-Wide Positive Behaviours (SWPB) is a whole school program which aims to create a positive school climate, a culture of student competence and an open, responsive management system for all school community members.  Introducing, modelling and reinforcing positive social behaviour is an important component of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioural expectations and rewarding or recognising students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehaviour to occur before responding.

The Guiding Principles of School Wide Positive Behaviour
  1. Student behaviour can be changed
  2. Environments can be created to change behaviour
  3. Changing environments requires change in adult behaviour
  4. Adult behaviour must change in a systematic and consistent manner
  5. Systems of support are necessary for both children and adults

Components of SWPBS
  • An agreed upon and common approach to discipline
  • A positive statement of purpose
  • A set of Values agreed upon by the school community
  • A matrix of positively stated expectations for students and staff
  • Procedures for teaching the expectations
  • A continuum of procedures for encouraging expected behaviours and discouraging inappropriate behaviours
  • A reward system for recognising and celebrating positive behaviours
  • Procedures for monitoring the effectiveness of the systems

Oak Park Primary School Values
The School-Wide Positive Bahaviours Support program is underpinned by the school’s values. At Oak Park Primary School, our values are reflected in our everyday learning and displayed and taught explicity in all areas of the school.
Our values are the ‘three R’s’; RESPECT, RESILIENCE, RESPONSIBILITY.

SWPBS Matrix
The Oak Park Primary School SWPB team is leading the development of a matrix of behaviours we wish to encourage. These will relate to our values, in all parts of the school and in all school related activities. All students are to be explicitly taught the values and expected behaviours. The behaviours will be consistently monitored by all staff and the relevant behaviours are expected from every staff member.

Positive Behaviours Home Matrix
Students in the SRC worked on a SWPB matrix that links our values with things that happen outside of school. Please see the Positive Behaviours Home Matrix. You might like to use it to help your children understand what our shared values mean and what we can do to demonstrate that we think these things are important.
