Science at Oak Park Primary

At Oak Park Primary School, we believe that science plays a crucial role in helping students understand the world around them. Our Science program provides students with opportunities to explore, question, and investigate scientific concepts and processes through a dynamic, collaborative, and creative approach. Our program is designed to develop students' scientific knowledge, skills, and understanding of the contributions of science to society.

Our Science program at Oak Park Primary aims to:
  • Foster student curiosity and encourage a desire to explore, ask questions, and speculate about the world around them
  • Develop a deep understanding of living things, the Earth and its place in the universe, and the physical and chemical processes that explain the behaviour of all material things
  • Enhance skills in scientific inquiry, including questioning, planning and conducting experiments, collecting and analysing data, evaluating results, and drawing evidence-based conclusions
  • Develop skills in communicating scientific findings to a range of audiences and evaluating scientific arguments and claims
  • Encourage problem-solving and decision-making

At Oak Park Primary, our junior students (F-2) have one Science session per week for the first two terms of the year. Our senior school students (3-6) have one Science session per week for the second two terms of the year. In the early years, Grades Foundation to 2, students will learn about materials and their properties, living things and their features, weather and seasonal changes, and the production of light and sound. Grade 3/4 students will focus on the impact of temperature on different materials, observable features of living and non-living things, fair testing, and how the Earth's rotation and axis cause changes. Grade 5/6 students will develop a deeper understanding of observable properties in gases, liquids, and solids, adaptations and structural features that help living things survive, the planets and the Earth's place in the solar system, and the absorption, reflection, and refraction of light.
