Principal's Column
We’re back! Sort of. Students in Foundation, Grades 1 and 2 returned yesterday and I thought the staggered start worked really well. It was a great way to welcome students and to facilitate a calm, relaxed and very welcoming return to school. I want to thank all of our families for their wonderful support throughout this term; you have been amazing. There have been huge challenges and some anxious moments but we greatly appreciate how you have worked with us and your children as we managed remote learning together. Schools rely greatly on the goodwill of their communities to make things work and we are very fortunate to have the Oak Park Primary School community supporting us. Thank you. I also want to thank all of our teachers for their very creative work during the past few months. They have responded exceptionally well to significant challenges and have learned a lot along the way, including several innovations that will become a regular part of their classrooms going forward. Thank you to Maria Giordano and the Student Wellbeing Leaders who had worked really hard (the kids came in especially for this and arrived at school very early) to make a large poster and put up balloons and flags welcoming the students back to their classrooms. It was great! I do have to admit though, I’d had enough of the song ‘Welcome Back’ by the end of the 35th playing of it. Teachers were very happy to see their students yesterday. There is still some apprehension and care about how we do things during these times, but we are glad to be interacting face to face with the kids again. My advice to staff has been to reconsider expectations for the next few weeks. We will worry about reading levels, assessments and data a little later and our immediate focus will be on rebuilding relationships. We will be closely monitoring how students transition back to school and helping them to build a strong platform for further learning. Parent/Teacher Meetings
Online or over the phone parent/teacher meetings will be offered during the last week of this term. Many parents had a lot of communication with their child’s teacher during Term 2 and will feel that is not necessary to participate in a mid-year meeting so these will be optional for parents. Parents who do choose to have a meeting will have the opportunity to share their perspectives on how their children responded to the remote learning environment that was in place for most of the term. More information will follow in coming weeks. Foundation 2021
