This week, we began our focus on an important learning disposition: "Is willing to struggle and believes that great learning relates to persistence." We believe that fostering a positive attitude towards maths learning involves encouraging students to embrace challenges and persist through difficulties. By understanding that great learning comes from perseverance, students can develop resilience and a growth mindset. Struggling with complex problems and persisting in finding solutions are essential parts of the learning process, leading to growth and deeper understanding. Teachers will be incorporating activities and discussions around this disposition in the classroom. We encourage you to support this at home by praising effort, celebrating persistence, and discussing what can be learned from overcoming challenges. Our WOW awards this week will also focus on this disposition. Together, let's inspire our students to embrace struggle and persist in their learning journeys. Dr Cranky’s Free Bike Checks! On Wednesday 26th June 2024, we have our student-led conferences. They take place after you have received your child’s Semester 1 report and are an opportunity for you and your child to meet with the classroom teacher. Why are they called student-let conferences? The students will lead the start of the conference, showcasing their learning from Semester 1. Students in the junior grades, up to Grade 3/4, will be using the Seesaw app to show their learning journey across a range of curriculum areas. Students in 5/6 will be using Google Classroom to present their learning. Will I get a chance to talk with my child’s teacher about how they are going? Yes. Once your child has shared/presented their learning, you will have an opportunity to discuss their progress with the teacher. Be mindful that your child will be present, so please keep the conversation focused on celebrating their achievements and what their future goals may be. Students will walk away feeling much better if you focus on their strengths rather that their weaknesses. How long does the conference go for? The conference goes for 15 mins. The student component will go for around 5-7mins and you will have the remaining time to talk with the classroom teacher. Can I speak with the specialist teachers? Yes, the specialist teachers will not be taking bookings, but they will be sitting in the library, and you can drop in and visit them. You do not need to meet with the specialist teachers, but they will be available if you have any questions. How do I book a time with the classroom teacher? Bookings will be made available via the Compass app from Monday 3rd June 2024. If you have trouble booking, please contact the office. We will not be booking times for parents, but we are always happy to help ensure you can use the booking function on the app. Lunchtime Clubs
Lunchtime clubs are in full swing, and it has been great to see students enjoying the different activities in their break time. Please see the updated timetable below. The Wellbeing Hub
The Wellbeing Hub has been particularly popular with our junior students wanting to come inside and draw. It has been so popular that the purpose of the Wellbeing Hub being a quiet space for students to retreat to if needed, is being lost and attracting too many students. We have now added an extra drawing club with Alex on a Wednesday and clarified the purpose of the Wellbeing Hub. Please see below. WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING

Benefits of Visual Arts for Children Visual arts offer numerous benefits for students at Oak Park Primary School and beyond. Below are some key advantages. Creativity Enhancement Visual arts encourage children to explore their imagination and think creatively. Through activities like drawing, painting, and making, students can express themselves in unique ways, fostering their creative thinking skills. Fine Motor Skills Development Engaging in art activities helps children refine their fine motor skills. Activities such as cutting, colouring, and manipulating materials require precise movements, which can improve dexterity and hand eye coordination. Self Expression and Communication Art provides a non verbal means for children to express themselves. It allows them to communicate feelings, ideas, and experiences that may be difficult to articulate verbally, promoting emotional intelligence and self awareness. Cultural Appreciation and Understanding Through exposure to various art forms from different cultures and historical periods, students develop an appreciation for diversity and a better understanding of the world around them. This fosters cultural empathy and tolerance. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Art encourages students to experiment, make decisions, and solve problems creatively. Whether they're figuring out how to represent a concept visually or troubleshooting issues in their artwork, they're improving their critical thinking skills. Boosts Confidence and Self Esteem Success in art projects, no matter how small, can significantly boost a child's confidence and self esteem. As they see their ideas come to life and receive positive feedback from peers and teachers, they develop a sense of pride in their abilities. Promotes Focus and Concentration Engaging in art requires concentration and attention to detail. As students immerse themselves in their artwork, they learn to focus their attention, which can translate to improved concentration in other areas of their academic and personal lives. Encourages Perseverance and Resilience Art projects often involve experimentation and revision. Students learn that setbacks are a natural part of the creative process and develop resilience as they persist in overcoming challenges to achieve their artistic goals. Enhances Visual Literacy Studying and creating visual art helps students become more visually literate. They learn to interpret and analyse visual information, such as colour, shape, and composition, which is valuable in understanding the visual world around them. Fosters Collaboration and Social Skills: Art activities often involve collaboration, whether it's working on group projects or providing feedback to peers. Through these interactions, students learn to communicate effectively, compromise, and work cooperatively as part of a team. |
