Our school continues to process green waste on-site to reduce wasted produced by the school, currently supported by our Year 3/4 students and composting bins.
Please find below an exciting challenge for students from our School Council considering how you can come up with creative ways to reduce food waste at home. Further prizes and information will be ‘dropped’ during the term to promote this great cause.

Professional Practice Day (Student Free) - Monday May 23rd
For Term 2, 2022, the Department of Education and Training has provided schools with the option to hold each teacher’s allocated professional practice day on the same day for all staff. This is to enable the most effective and efficient use of this day. This approach to hosting a professional practice day is in response to state-wide shortage of teachers and Casual Replacement Teachers (CRTs).

As a result, we have scheduled our professional practice day for Monday May 23rd. Students will therefore not be required to attend school on this day, but we are hoping that families can book a timeslot via the Compass App to complete reading benchmark assessments. This will assist teachers to prepare for school reports later in the term, please note it is not a meeting or process to seek feedback from teachers on the day.

We appreciate not all families are able to bring students into school during a student free day or fit into the limited timeslots, so any student not assessed on the Monday will complete their assessment during the usual school schedule.

Outside Hours School Care will be available, but students must enrol in the program with bookings required. The cost will be $70 before the Childcare Subsidy, with parents booking a week in advance to allow for staffing considerations.

Eid Mubarak!
I just wanted to wish a Happy Eid to families that have been fasting for Ramadan. We hope the celebratory feast was an opportunity to connect with family and friends. Thank you for the delicious delivery (below) which made me feel included in the celebration.

Mother's Day Stall
A reminder that Friday 6th May will be the last day of the Mothers Day stall, giving students the chance to buy gifts for their mums and grandmothers.
Don’t forget to bring some money to school on these days! All gifts are priced between $1 and $5.
PFA
Lost Property
We have some lost property in the office that must be very precious to those students who have lost pieces of jewellery.  We also have a school bag that was handed in by a neighbour, which was left on the road in Ash Gve. These are all held at the office.

Red House Reward
To celebrate Fire House (Red House) winning the school values token challenge for Term 1, we are providing a sausage sizzle for all students in Fire House (Red House).
We waited until the end of Ramadan to respect students and families that fast during this period.
For students in Red House, please send a normal lunch box on Friday but know that a sausage in bread will be provided to students.

All the provided sausages are Halal, some vegetarian sausages and Gluten-free bread can be made available to support dietary requirements.

Congratulations again to Fire House (Red House) for the win in Term 1 and earning the most tokens for displaying the values of Respect, Resilience and Responsibility.

5M’s Travel Plans
Grade 5 have been using their Maths lessons to take advantage of the removed travel restrictions! They were given the challenge to plan a trip from Melbourne to Brisbane. The students worked in groups to plan their route, taking into consideration where they would stop, why they would stop and for how long.
They knew that they had to refill the car with petrol every 300 km. The rest was up to them!

We had one group stopping in Shepparton before driving on to Wagga Wagga (299 km!) and then heading up to the coast before spending 6 days in Gold Coast. Another group opted to spend the night in Bright en route. Another group decided to stop off in Sydney to visit Luna Park. Hotels were chosen and lunch
spots picked out. One group even chose their car (Lamborghini)! One very brave group decided that they would
drive in shifts, through the night, in order to get to Brisbane faster.

A great lesson to introduce our topic of maps and location.

Performing Arts
Students are excited that Oak Park’s Got Talent is starting up again this term! Sign up is on Thursday 5th May and then weekly performances will begin where students show their talents in front of an audience. Oak Park’s Got Talent has a voting system where a winner is determined and has the option to perform in front of the school at assembly. The vote is done in a way where the audience and the performers don’t know the winner and there is no last place. The votes are anonymous and are counted up at the end of the performance by Performing Arts Captains. The winning place is a bonus for this activity and the most important part of the club is joining in and having the confidence to stand up in front of a crowd and perform. The students really do love it and I’m sure it will be the topic of conversation in many households this week.

Thanks to Martha and the Performing arts Captains Cagan and Isla who will be running the club this term.
Physical Education
Starting next Wednesday, we will have the Female Futsal Academy visiting our school to conduct their first training session for all the girls in grades 3-6 who signed up. Please note that this will continue for each Wednesday until further notice. Could you please send your daughter to school with the completed media form so we can hand that over to the organiser.

Secondly, we have two more weeks until we are competing at the local Cross Country event and I have had a lot of interest from students who are wishing to join! Just a friendly reminder that we can only take a maximum of 10 students from each age group. So if there is a large turnout, we will need to have a race to determine who qualifies for the team! This will most likely happen during a lunchtime next week.
Visual Arts
In Visual Arts classes over the past 1-2 sessions, students in all year levels have been working hard to create an artwork/gift to give to their Mum’s on Mother’s Day (no peeking before this Sunday mums!). The students are super excited to finish the artworks off this week and look forward to seeing the reaction that their gift brings.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the great mums that do an amazing job with the students at OPPS for this Sunday May 8th! Hope you get very spoilt!
