Maths Learning Dispositions and Staff Professional Learning |
This term, we are thrilled to launch a new initiative aimed at cultivating positive attitudes towards mathematics among our students. To begin, next week our students from Year 2 to Year 6 will participate in a brief survey to assess their current feelings and attitudes towards maths.
The statements we've developed (included above) embody the qualities of successful maths learners at Oak Park, emphasising positive attitudes, perseverance, and a growth mindset essential for success in mathematics and beyond. We are excited to involve the entire school community in this initiative. Stay tuned for updates in our school newsletter and during assemblies as each disposition is introduced into classrooms. Our teachers will focus upon one statement per week during Maths lessons and link our WOW awards to students that successfully demonstrate this disposition in class. Teachers are also undertaking their own learning to become even better at differentiating during Maths problem-solving lessons and ensure students understand and use defined strategies when solving maths problems. Parents and caregivers are invited to join us in nurturing a love for maths and fostering a positive learning environment for our students. You can easily support this effort by engaging in conversations with your children at home as each disposition is introduced in classrooms. Let's collaborate to inspire confident and enthusiastic mathematicians at Oak Park! Welcome Kerry Gribbin - Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader. Kerry Gribbin commenced with us this week as our new Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader.
Kerry brings with her a wealth of experience and enthusiasm, and we are excited to have her on board. As our Wellbeing Leader, Kerry will play a pivotal role in fostering positive relationships and supporting the well-being of our students and staff. Kerry is also working every Monday in 1W, alongside Caitlin, who teaches the class from Tuesday - Friday. Please join me in welcoming Kerry to Oak Park Primary School. We look forward to working together to create an engaging and nurturing learning environment for all our students. Kind regards, Michael Gill Principal Written by Mac 5/6A

National Simultaneous Storytime
Dear Parents/Guardians,
On Wednesday May 22 all students at Oak Park Primary School will be participating in the National Simultaneous Storytime. Students in their grades will read this year’s book Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker and complete a follow up activity. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family day cares, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 24th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6. By facilitating NSS we aim to:

Performing Arts
All the students are so excited to finally find out what the concert theme will be this year! Everyone will find out midterm when the teachers will reveal the theme during assembly. Last concert we were so lucky to perform The Lion King Jnr, and the only hint we can give is that Disney will be here again at Oak Park Primary! Before rehearsals begin students will be focussing on their drama skills and practise performing in front of their peers to give all students ample time to feel ready for the big show. Foundation Students will be learning new drama skills while acting out familiar characters from traditional stories. Halfway through the term student will begin rehearsing for the Term 3 school concert to ensure all students will be confident with their routine to perform in front of a large audience at Clocktower Theatre. Grade 1/2 Drama games and theatre sports focus on team building and creating a positive atmosphere in the Performing Arts space. Students are free to experiment with new and familiar drama practices and are explicitly taught phrases to encourage others. Students build confidence while speaking and miming in front of a small audience. Students will also begin to learn their concert item mid term. Grade 3/4 Students will be introduced to new Drama games and devices and build up their drama vocabulary. The drama assessment piece will focus on students selecting a script, completing the end of the script and performing the script with a partner to their peers. Students will provide feedback to each other about their performances. Students will also begin to learn their concert item mid term. Grade 5/6 During Term 2 students will be focussing on preparing for concert auditions and will be given scripts to perform using the assessment that will be used during auditions. Students will understand how voice projection, facial expressions and body gestures enhance performances and will build confidence while performing a variety of scripts. Grades will also begin to learn their concert item mid term. Physical Education
I am back from having knee surgery and super excited to get back into PE! We are approaching the start of our Friday sports this Friday and it is important that we model good sportsmanship across the board. Please have a quick read of this article to highlight some tips to being a good sport! What Is Sportsmanship? Sportsmanship is when people who are playing or watching a sport treat each other with respect. This includes players, parents, coaches, officials, and fans. Kids might not know how to show they’re good sports, so it’s up to parents and coaches to set the right example. How Can Kids Learn to Be Good Sports? Before kids have their next practice or game, encourage them to:
Kids learn how to be a good sport from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and coaches. As soon as your child starts playing sports, it's important to be a positive role model. Any teams your child plays on should have coaches who encourage sportsmanship. A lot of the tips that you can give kids to follow when they play sports also apply to you when you’re in the stands or on the sidelines: Be supportive. Applaud good plays, no matter who makes them. Keep comments encouraging rather than bad-mouthing anyone. Congratulate the winners, even if they're on the other team. If you have a serious concern, talk privately with the coach or official. Offer to help kids improve. After a competition, don't focus on who won or lost. Instead, try asking, "What did you do well during the game?" or "Was there something you wish you could have done better?" If your child feels that something could have gone better, offer to work on it together before the next game. Look for examples of sportsmanship. When a local or professional athlete is respectful to another player, point it out to your kids. Talk about the negative examples too, and why they upset you. How Can I Be a Good Coach? If you are a coach for your child's team, be fair and positive and encourage the players to do the same. Encourage and praise all players for being part of the team, no matter their skill level. Point out when kids show good sportsmanship. By highlighting positive examples in real time, you encourage other kids to act in a similar way. Parents and coaches who emphasize good sportsmanship help young athletes learn respect for others and self-control. These skills can help them manage other parts of their lives, and help them develop into mature, respectful, and successful young adults. Medically reviewed by: Margaux J. The Grade 5/6 students have been busy creating role-plays this term. Students are working in small groups and were given the task of writing a script, rehearsing and recording a role-play. The role-play had to include 5 phrases we have been learning together throughout the semester. Students worked together to create a script that made sense using the required language. Everyone has had lots of fun rehearsing and recording their role-plays and we are beginning to share them as a whole class. It has been wonderful to see students showcasing their Japanese language skills. Visual Arts Visual Arts classes have become bustling workshops, teeming with youthful energy and boundless creativity. Students are channelling their artistic prowess into crafting unique pieces that express their gratitude, admiration, and love for the maternal figures in their lives. While we'd love to spill the paint splattered beans about the specific artworks being crafted, we're keeping it under wraps for now. After all, what fun would it be if we spoiled the surprise for all the wonderful mothers out there? Instead, we'll leave it to your imagination to conjure images of the beautiful creations taking shape within the walls of the Art Room Oak Park Primary School. As Mother's Day approaches, the excitement in the air is palpable. Students are bubbling with anticipation, eagerly counting down the days until they can present their masterpieces to the incredible women who have shaped their lives. It's a moment of pure joy and heartfelt connection, a chance for children to express their gratitude in the language of art, and for mothers to bask in the love and admiration of their kids. So, prepare to be surprised, delighted, and perhaps even a little misty eyed, as you receive these precious tokens of affection from your children. JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
