It’s finally done! The Indigenous Bottle Top Mural has been completed and installed on the exterior wall between the Library and Staffroom. It looks great! It brings and bit of much needed colour and texture to the school, as well as a message of how important family is to the Oak Park Primary School community, and indeed the Aboriginal peoples of Australia and the Torres Straight Islands. I would like to show my gratitude and respect towards the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation for allowing us to create this mural on the lands on which the school is found. Permission was sort from Aboriginal DET employees to be able to use the Aboriginal symbol for family, along with the Aboriginal Flag as well as the Spirit Creator – Bunjil (The Wedge Tailed Eagle). So thank you to those involved in granting this project to go ahead. Students and teachers that donated their time to be involved in making the mural at lunchtimes and after hours – THANK YOU SO MUCH! A lot of hard work went into hours of painting, gluing, stapling and finally installing. The final tally of bottle tops was in excess of five thousand pieces. A mammoth task indeed! Most of the bottle tops came from donations from local businesses and individuals, most of which would have been put into the recycling bin. A special mention goes out to the families at OPPS, St. Derby Café, Jeanette from Kent Road Uniting Kinder and Nudie Foods for donating the majority of the lids required to complete the project. If you get a chance to take a look at the mural over the next few weeks, it’s well worth it in person. The photos are good but being up close to the mural is even better! Hope the OPPS community enjoys this new installation. Looking forward to the next bottle top mural being created in the future! Principal's Column
Curriculum Day Reminder – Final Day of Term Tuesday - December 20th. Early Finish 1:30 – December 19th. We have one final Curriculum Day this year, on Tuesday December 20th, so please flag this in your calendars. Our final day of the school year will be Monday the 19th of December with an early finish at 1:30pm. Our end of year assembly will take place on the last Friday, December 16th at 3:00pm. Upcoming ‘Reuse’ T-Shirt Lunchtime Event As a follow up to our recent enviro-week theme of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – we will be hosting a re-use event for students to print a design on an old t-shirt. The shortlisted designs are below. Our friend at Bobbin and Ink will select four winning designs to create stencils, with designs rolled using fabric paint. Thanks to all the classes that submitted their shortlisted design. We’ll promote the event via Compass when we’re ready-to-roll the paint. 😊 Class Placements for 2023
As we begin to draft our new classes for 2023, there are several factors that will be carefully considered. In each new class, teachers will aim to ensure that there is a balance of academic capabilities, social competencies, behavioural traits & special needs, so that the classes at each level have an almost identical profile. In addition to these factors, our teachers also take into account each child’s nominated peers to ensure that every child is matched to at least one friend that supports their learning (Please note that the peers/friends are not listed in any preferential order and it is explained to all students). As you can appreciate this is a very complex task, especially considering our total school enrolment of around 390 students. To this end, please be assured that all of these factors are carefully considered. Like you, we want to ensure that we establish the best learning opportunities for all of our students. Given the rigour in this process, we ask that parents refrain from requesting friendship groupings and teacher preferences, unless there are extenuating circumstances that we may not be aware of which may potentially impact on a child’s placement. If you believe that extenuating circumstances exist in regards to your child’s placement in 2023. please provide these details via email at [email protected]. It’s only just over a week until Zoe has her first day at OPPS! Her first scheduled day is Friday 2nd December. As Zoe’s first job is learning to relax, we need to remember we won’t see much of her in the beginning. Her timetable is filled with various activities including time in Michael’s office, a tour of the school, playtime with some teachers and a rest in the library. She will visit the doorways of classrooms with Michael and Sally while she’s on her school tour and this will be an opportunity for students to practise the 3 expectations (see the reminder below). Parents, it would be great if you could reiterate these expectations with your children at home and discuss the importance of how they will assist Zoe in learning to relax.
We hope everyone is getting excited for Zoe’s arrival! Carols Night
Staff Car Park
We would once again ask parents/guardians to not park in the staff car park at any time, particularly in the morning when dropping off your child to Before Care. Staff are arriving to school from 8am onwards and it can be quite difficult to access a car park. This also includes during the day when picking up or dropping off students. We realise that car parking around the school is at a premium before and after school, but staff need to be able to access their own car park. We thank you for your consideration. Working with Children Check (WWCC)
Our Compass visitor sign in has been updated and now requires your WWC details to be input when visiting the school. Please ensure you have your card on you so you may sign in. We ask parents to also forward a copy of their card to our school email [email protected] so we may have on file. Online Lunch Orders
As of next week, Lunch Orders can be ordered online via an app called QKR, which can be downloaded from the App store (details below). QKR is all set up now for Oak Park Primary School and ready to go with online canteen ordering as of next week, Thursday 1st December for lunch orders on Friday 2nd December Until the end of the year parents will still be able to order with paper bag as well as online but as of 2023 it will be online only. Performing Arts
Family Picnic Night Our Family Picnic Night is next week! We are hoping the weather will warm up for this special night! Students are rehearsing their songs and are ready for this fun, casual community event. Below are the list of songs the students will be singing (your child may like to practise at home!). Don’t forget to bring cash for the sausage sizzle and Zooper Doopers! Do you have large Christmas decorations? If you have any simple large Christmas decorations that you could lend for the night please see Melanie. We have large hanging Christmas baubles but I am looking for something to sit near the poles, large candy canes or similar? Please let me know! Physical Education
This week in PE we have Oak Park footy club Women’s Team dropping in to run clinics for some of our students. On Friday they will be taking the 5/6 girls for a session during their morning sport, and the following week they will be working with some of our Grade 3/4 students on Tuesday. Starting from next year we are hoping to continue to foster a deep connection with Oak Park footy club and promote girls footy in general. Stay tuned for more information 😊 Cheers, Liam Lost Property
A ‘Smiggle’ brand bag/purse has been found on the back of the oval a while ago. If your child has lost this, please call in to the office. The purse contains money. P.F.A News
