Student Led Conferences
On Wednesday, 25th June 2025, we will be holding our student-led conferences. These take place after you have received your child’s Semester 1 report and provide an opportunity for you and your child to meet with the classroom teacher. This is a pupil-free day (no classes will be running), but your child is expected to attend their conference. If you require care for your child on the day, Team Kids will be operating.

Why are they called student-led conferences?
The students will lead the start of the conference, showcasing their learning from Semester 1. Students in the junior grades (up to Grade 3/4) will use the Seesaw app to share their learning journey across a range of curriculum areas. Students in Grades 5/6 will use Google Classroom to present their learning.

Will I get a chance to talk with my child’s teacher about how they are going?
Yes. Once your child has shared their learning, you will have an opportunity to discuss their progress with the teacher. Please be mindful that your child will be present, so keep the conversation focused on celebrating their achievements and identifying future goals. Students will walk away feeling more confident if the focus is on their strengths rather than their weaknesses.

How long does the conference go for?
The conference lasts for 15 minutes. The student component will take approximately 5-7 minutes, with the remaining time allocated for discussion with the classroom teacher. We ask that you respect the short time frame, as delays can have a flow-on effect. For example, some families have back-to-back appointments with other teachers, and we don’t want anyone to miss their time slot. It may also impact the teacher’s ability to take a toilet or lunch break. If you feel more time is needed, please arrange an alternative time with the teacher to continue the conversation.

Can I speak with the specialist teachers?
Yes. Specialist teachers will not be taking bookings, but they will be available in the library for drop-in visits. You are not required to meet with them, but they will be available if you have any questions.

How do I book a time with the classroom teacher?
Bookings will be available via the Compass app from Wednesday 4thJune 2025. If you have any trouble booking, please contact the office. While we are unable to book times for parents, we are always happy to help you navigate the booking function on the app.
Upcoming Open Streets Event Thursday June 26th – Supported by Dr Cranky
Picture
Riding, walking or scooting to school is a great way to start your day. We want to make sure every student at Oak Park Primary School can do just that, so we’ve partnered with Merri Bek City Council and charity organisation Dr Cranky’s to run a FREE School Bike Checks.

Dr Cranky’s will fix bikes and if you don’t have a bike, they can provide a second-hand bike at no cost! Their first visit for 2025 is Thursday June 19th before school (near the basketball court) and at our Open Street event Thursday, June 26th.

So if your bike needs some repair, please come and engage with Bart and his awesome team!

Parking on Willett Avenue – Please observe the relevant signage.

A quick reminder to please observe the parking signage on Willett Avenue. The bus zone is reserved for collections and drop-offs and utilised daily for some local students attending a Special School, so we kindly ask that you avoid parking there during signed times including school pick up.
Your cooperation helps ensure a smooth and safe process for all students.
Thank you for your support.

Kind regards,

Michael Gill
Principal

MATHEMATICS INVESTIGATION - “Frogtopia”

In Week 6 on Monday, parents were asked to support their child in making an origami jumping frog.
By Wednesday, teacher’s desk were covered with colourful frogs and this week, students got to explore a Maths Investigation using the jumping frogs.
We were investigating: How far can an origami frog jump?
Teacher’s used masking tape to keep jumping start/end points consistent and the jumps were measured. Once all students had trialled and recorded jumps, they took this important data to plot on a graph. This authentic learning engaged even our most frog shy students!

For any keen families who would like to make a frog, please see instructions and a QR code below.

Elevate Education
Last week, our Year 6 students participated in Elevate Education’s Junior Time Management workshop, where they learned practical strategies for prioritising tasks, building effective routines, and overcoming procrastination. The session supported students in developing study habits that will help them navigate the transition to high school with confidence. These skills also support students in managing their homework more effectively, helping them stay organised and reduce last-minute stress. It was fantastic to see our Grade 6’s enthusiastically engaging in this workshop!

SPECIALISTS
Visual Arts - Art Show
SAVE THE DATE:
We are thrilled to announce that Oak Park Primary School’s 2025 Art Show will be held in Term 4 on Thursday 23rd October! This year’s theme, “Great Southern Land – Beach to Bush”, celebrates all things Aussie and will showcase a stunning collection of student artworks inspired by our beautiful country.

The Art Show is not just a celebration of creativity – it’s also a fundraising event to support our school. Families will need to purchase tickets to attend (more info to be announced around ticketing/entry), and every student will have one special artwork framed as a keepsake to commemorate the event.

On the night, there will be plenty to enjoy including a sausage sizzle, refreshments, and a variety of raffles and silent auctions. We’re very excited to announce that some of the amazing items up for auction include:
  • Two framed, hand-signed prints by Ken Done, one of Australia’s most iconic artists
  • A handmade quilt featuring an Aboriginal inspired design
  • Additional one-of-a-kind artworks (currently being sourced and created!)
We’re also working on a range of fun activities and attractions to make the evening even more special – we’ll keep families updated as the date gets closer.

Students have already begun working on their incredible artworks and are buzzing with excitement to share them with you at the Art Show. They are looking forward to seeing the reactions from parents and other family members, when they see their awesome artworks on display in the school gymnasium.

If you or your business would like to donate items towards the raffle or silent auction, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact David Flint (Visual Arts Teacher) at [email protected]

More information will about the Art Show will be available in coming weeks and will be made available via newsletters and Compass. Thank you for supporting the Visual Arts Program at Oak Park Primary – we can’t wait to see you at the big event.
