Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day
Picture
Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day are important times in Australia that help us remember and learn about the First Nations people, who were the first people to live on our land. National Sorry Day is a day to remember the past, when some First Nations children were taken away from their families and communities. Reconciliation Week is a week where we learn about their culture and work towards being a better, more respectful Australia.

We can learn and celebrate our First Nations people through stories, dance and art. In Visual Arts this week, Foundation students worked on their art pieces using traditional Indigenous art methods and in Performing Arts students are learning about traditional Indigenous stories, like ‘When the Snake Bites the Sun’ and ‘The Rainbow Serpent’. Learning about cultures through the Arts is great ways for students to learn and celebrate our First Nation People. School Captains also discussed the importance of National Sorry Day during Junior assembly on Friday 30th May.

Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day are about learning from the past and working towards a future where everyone is treated fairly and respectfully.

Character Design Art Competition
Our school is redesigning our School Wide Positive Behaviour matrix to make it more accessible to students. We are asking for students to draw a character for each of our three school values ‘Respect’, ‘Responsibility’,
and ‘Resilience’.   All students from Foundation-Grade 6 can participate.
There will be one prize for each Foundation-Grade 2 and Grades 3-6 for the most creative entries.
Entry forms can be collected from the office.
Entries must be submitted to the office by Week 7 Friday June 6th.

Australian Maths Challenge
Over the past few weeks, 20 students from Grades 3-6 have been stretching their brains and building their maths muscles as part of the AMT Maths Challenge. This exciting program, developed by the Australian Maths Trust, encourages students to think creatively and use a range of strategies to solve challenging maths problems.
Each week, the group has come together to tackle tricky tasks, working in pairs and small groups to share ideas, explain their thinking, and develop their problem-solving skills. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they support and learn from one another.
To celebrate their hard work and teamwork, the students will take part in a special scavenger hunt and escape room experience next week—designed by our fabulous education support staff member, Allison Penno. We can’t wait to see where their mathematical adventures take them next!

Unexplained Absences
Once again, we would ask families to please clear their childs unexplained absences from Compass.
It is a requirement that parents/carers notify their childs full day absence via Compass with the reason for that absence.
With regards to late arrivals and early departures, we also ask that families do not notify these from home.
  • If your child is late to school, they MUST be signed in at the office at their actual time of arrival to school, by the parent/carer who is dropping them off.
  • If you are picking your child up early, you MUST sign them out at the office, then take that slip to their class to pick them up.  Please do not ask your child to wait at the office for collection.
These are both safety measures.
Bunnings Sausage Sizzle – Volunteers Needed
Oak Park Primary School will be hosting a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Sunday 15th June at the Coburg store.  We need volunteers to help in the tent from 7:30am to 5:30pm working 2 hour shifts.

If you can help on the day, please reach out via email with the following details;
- Name
- Phone number
- What times work best for you
- Is there someone you prefer to work with (get a couple of friends to volunteer with you)

If you can’t help on the day, but still want to support our fundraising, we would gratefully accept any cash donations to assist purchasing supplies for the sausage sizzle.
Please email John at [email protected]
Thank you,
PFA

SPECIALISTS
Visual Arts - Art Show
SAVE THE DATE:
We are thrilled to announce that Oak Park Primary School’s 2025 Art Show will be held in Term 4 on Thursday 23rd October! This year’s theme, “Great Southern Land – Beach to Bush”, celebrates all things Aussie and will showcase a stunning collection of student artworks inspired by our beautiful country.

The Art Show is not just a celebration of creativity – it’s also a fundraising event to support our school. Families will need to purchase tickets to attend (more info to be announced around ticketing/entry), and every student will have one special artwork framed as a keepsake to commemorate the event.

On the night, there will be plenty to enjoy including a sausage sizzle, refreshments, and a variety of raffles and silent auctions. We’re very excited to announce that some of the amazing items up for auction include:
  • Two framed, hand-signed prints by Ken Done, one of Australia’s most iconic artists
  • A handmade quilt featuring an Aboriginal inspired design
  • Additional one-of-a-kind artworks (currently being sourced and created!)
We’re also working on a range of fun activities and attractions to make the evening even more special – we’ll keep families updated as the date gets closer.

Students have already begun working on their incredible artworks and are buzzing with excitement to share them with you at the Art Show. They are looking forward to seeing the reactions from parents and other family members, when they see their awesome artworks on display in the school gymnasium.

If you or your business would like to donate items towards the raffle or silent auction, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact David Flint (Visual Arts Teacher) at [email protected]

More information will about the Art Show will be available in coming weeks and will be made available via newsletters and Compass. Thank you for supporting the Visual Arts Program at Oak Park Primary – we can’t wait to see you at the big event.
