Community of Practice – Working other network schools to focus on Wellbeing Practices
At Oak Park Primary School, we are excited to share our participation in a Community of Practice with other local schools, focusing on the vital question: "How can strategic resourcing support the maturing of Tier 2 practices in primary schools?"

Our collaborative efforts aim to refine and strengthen the support structures for our students, particularly through Tier 2 interventions. These targeted strategies provide essential support for students who need more than universal interventions but do not yet require intensive, individualized Tier 3 supports.

Key objectives of our Community of Practice include:
  • Professional Learning (PL) for Educational Support (ES) Staff: We are equipping our ES staff with the skills needed to deliver effective small group interventions, enhancing their capacity to support student learning and wellbeing.
  • Inclusive Practice for Teachers: By focusing on inclusive practices, we aim to ensure that all teachers understand their roles in supporting diverse learners. This includes adapting documentation and systems in preparation for Disability Inclusion (DI) profiles.
  • Effective Individual Education Plans (IEPs): Leading professional learning in effective IEP practices, we aim to tailor education plans that meet the specific needs of our students, ensuring they receive the best possible support.
  • Resource Sharing: Exploring the possibilities of resource sharing, particularly in sourcing allied health professionals, allows us to expand our support network and provide comprehensive care for our students.

This collaborative initiative reflects our commitment to fostering a supportive, inclusive environment where every student can succeed. Through strategic resourcing and a community-focused approach, we are confident in our ability to enhance our Tier 2 practices and make a significant impact on student wellbeing.

Reminder - Whole School Assemblies for Term 3
Due to concert preparations, we will be holding Whole School Assemblies every fortnight for Term 3 only. The first assembly will begin next week, and students receiving WOW Awards will be seated at the front beforehand.

We understand that whole school assemblies can be large events, so we have supports in place for our neurodivergent students to ensure everyone feels supported.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we prepare for our upcoming concert.

Kind regards,
Michael Gill

Grade 1 News
As part of the Grade 1, Term 3 Inquiry focus, ‘Mapping our Place’ students will explore the scale of places in our local community and why they have an address. They will examine how places, including streets, are given names and investigate the meanings of the names of places in their local area. Students will learn about connections that people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders People's, have to local and global places.

To introduce our new topic, the Grade 1 students went on a walk to visit places that are specific to our local area on Tuesday 23rd July.

Students visited the Oak Park Aquatics Centre and were taken on a tour on the facilities by the centre manager, Brad. We also stopped by a local park for fruit break and to have a play on the playground.
On the way home we visited Francis Winifred where Barista Louie came out to greet us and even recognised some of lovely students.

During our walk we discussed distinctive features that suburbs have (roads, street signs etc.) and the significance that various buildings and facilities we visited have our local community.

We had a wonderful morning exploring our local area!

NETBALL
Our awesome Oak Park Girls made the divisional finals for Netball and played at Macleod Netball Stadium yesterday. It was a full day schedule for us against four other schools in our Inner North/Moreland division. I am beyond proud of how our girls played and acted throughout the day and although we only won 1 out of our 4 games; we were so close and competitive with our other matches that it could’ve gone either way. We challenged the top team at the end of the day which was so impressive! It was a super effort all round.
It was such a huge achievement to make it to divisional finals that all the girls should be proud of themselves. I honestly could not be prouder of them all.

Special shout outs to…
Mariam- for being supportive throughout the term for the Netballers and for umpiring our games
Kim, Tim Branagan and Simone Tsinidis- for helping with scoring and supporting along the sidelines
Kristy Holmes, Lauren Higgins and Aisha Hazim for coming along and supporting the girls as well.
All your support and encouragement were very much appreciated.

THANK YOU!
Well Done Oakers- finals again next year!!!
One very proud coach

Moana Junior
F - 2 Colouring Competition

Students in Foundation, Grade 1 and Grade 2 are invited to participate in a colouring competition based on the Moana Junior school concert. This is not a compulsory activity. Only students that wish to enter the competition are going to be bringing home an A3 sized colouring page.

Students can collect a colouring sheet when attending their art classes, or they can pop by the art room at lunchtime, recess, before or after school to collect one.
Artwork entries for the competition are due back to David (OPPS Art teacher) or the Art Room no later than Thursday the 22nd of August.
Guidelines for students to keep in mind when colouring
You may add colour using:
  • Coloured Pencils
  • Coloured Markers
  • Crayons
  • Watercolour Paint
Other things to consider:
  • It is recommended that you don’t use pastels as they smudge and are difficult to add to smaller spaces.
  • You can add colour using any colours you wish. They don’t have to be the same as the Moana animated movie.
  • Try to colour all of the page.
There will be a winner selected from each of the year levels (F, 1 and 2). The winners will be selected by the Art Teacher (David) and the Grade 6 Visual Arts Captains (Alex and Eaintchue).

Competition PRIZE
The 3 winners receive a $50 Smiggle voucher and a pencil case with art supplies inside.
Please forward any questions to David Flint (OPPS Art Teacher) via email. Good luck to all students that enter the competition.

Moana Junior School Concert Poster Competition
Our school concert spectacular Moana Junior is fast approaching. It’s time for students from Grades 3-6 to get their creative wizardry fired up, to create a poster that represents all things Moana Junior.

Students were given the opportunity to begin their designs during art lessons in the final week of Term 2. Now it’s over to the students to work on their ideas for the concert posters at home. This is not a compulsory activity. Only students that wish to enter the competition need to complete the poster design.

Artwork entries for the competition are due back to David (OPPS Art teacher) no later than Thursday the 1st of August (Friday the 2nd is a Curriculum Day).

Guidelines for students to keep in mind when creating their posters
  • No tracing direct copies or directly replicating the Disney animated movie characters for the poster.
  • Any art medium may be used to create the poster as long as it can be scanned (no reflective or neon colours). Make sure to use rich colour that won’t fade when scanned.
  • The poster must be done in a portrait orientation.
  • Include the following information (text) on the poster
    - Oak Park Primary School Proudly Presents
    - Moana Junior (Jr.) title
    - Clocktower Centre – Moonee Ponds
    - Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th of September
    - 7:00 p.m.
    - The Disney Logo may be included on the poster, but not necessary.

Top 10 finalists will be acknowledged on the nights of the concert on the big screen in the Clocktower Theatre. Winning entry will be completed by a whole staff vote, with a points system

Competition PRIZE
The winner receives 2 free concert tickets, a poster sized copy of their artwork (laminated) and a large pencil case full of art supplies.

Please forward any questions to David Flint (OPPS Art Teacher) via email. Good luck to all students that enter the competition.

Japanese
Hello!
I am excited to have Foundation to Grade 2 students in Japanese this semester.
The Japanese Language program will focus on both language and culture. The aim will be for students to develop knowledge and skills in communicating in Japanese, as well as gaining an understanding of some aspects of Japanese culture including celebrations, traditions and customs.

The program will focus on everyday interactions such as exchanging greetings and farewells as well as sharing information about themselves including their favourite colours and animals. Students will also be introduced Kanji numbers and will practice reading and writing the characters. Students will be given lots of opportunities for verbal practice and interaction with peers through songs, games and roles plays.

Students will also be introduced to the 3 writing systems, hiragana, katakana and kanji and begin to practice writing numbers and common characters/words.
If you have any questions regarding the Japanese Language Program please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Performing Arts
Students are learning more about Polynesian culture during their rehearsals for our Moana Jnr production. Each grade has learnt how Polynesian people greet each other (heads together and breathing in) and are making connections to how they greet family and friends. Student are now creating their own class greetings which will help create unity and connectiveness during concert rehearsals and they will also use these gestures to focus as a class before performing on stage.

Students are learning the meaning of Polynesian dance moves and learning new Samoan phrases used throughout the production. We are recognising the importance of cultural traditions and the essential story telling which is passed on through generations.
Until our next concert update- Faifai lemu! (take it easy!)
Physical Education
This week in PE I have been away on Somers Camp with a few of the students from Grades 5 and 6. We spent the last 9 days away from home with 160 students from a range of schools from the Inner North/Merri-bek areas and we had a blast!

We spent our days singing songs, learning about local marine and bird life, living and working together as part of a community and challenging ourselves in so many ways. Oh, and let's not forget highlights such as high ropes courses, giant swings, mountain biking, drama, and dancing.

If this camp sounds like something you may be interested in having your child in grade 5 or 6 attend, the next chance our school will be able to take part again will be in 2026.
