Open Street Success!
|
We are thrilled to share the success of this term’s Open Street! The event was an incredible success, with both the morning and evening sessions being well-attended by students, parents, and community members.
A special shout-out goes to Dr. Cranky and his team of wonderful volunteers. Their generous donation of 5 bikes to our students and the completion of over 50 repairs and improvements, such as adding bells and reflectors, made a significant impact. We were also delighted to have our Ride and Stride representative from Merri-Bek council visit. They were highly impressed with our setup and traffic management, highlighting our commitment to safety and community involvement. A heartfelt thank you to Thanks a Latte Coffee Van, Melanie, Prateek and Thomas from Team Kids who made this event possible and to everyone who attended and enjoyed owning the street with us. Your participation and enthusiasm truly made this event a memorable one. Wellbeing News – School-wide Social Emotional Learning Beyond the small group sessions of Social Emotional Learning for identified students, we also teach using the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) and Bounce Back programs to all students to enhance our students' social, emotional, and positive relationship skills. These programs align perfectly with our core values of resilience, respect, and responsibility. The RRRR learning materials cover many Social and Emotional Learning topics that are integrated across all levels of primary education including: emotional literacy, personal strengths, positive coping, problem solving, stress management and help seeking. By incorporating these topics into our curriculum, we aim to foster a supportive and inclusive environment where students can develop the skills necessary for building positive relationships and managing challenges effectively. Our commitment to these values ensures that every student at Oak Park Primary not only excels academically but also grows into a respectful, responsible, and resilient individual. Uniform Reminders – Jackets and Beanies, not in class please. The implementation of the Student Uniform Policy is designed to improve individual student safety and group security and to assist all students to develop a sense of collective identity, ownership and pride in the school. Our uniform is also based around a premise of low cost to families and highlights many items that can be purchased from affordable locations like Kmart and BIG-W. During the winter months we allow students to wear jackets when outside and beanies upon arrival to school. A jacket should be worn on top of regular uniform and then removed when entering classrooms. Both jackets and beanies are not to be worn in classrooms. We have also recently had a number of students wearing jumpers that are not appropriate school uniform. Uniform reminders will be sent via the Compass app, to respectfully remind families of the importance of wearing appropriate uniform. For shoes, we simply ask that students wear comfortable shoes that are closed toe for safety reasons. Students need to run and enjoy their lunch and recess times, so shoes that make students comfortable and safe are important – the colour is not. Further information can be found in our uniform policy hosted here. Kind regards, Michael Gill Principal ENROLMENT & TRANSITION INFORMATION

PFA News: Successful Student Disco!
Last Friday 14 June was the OPPS Student Disco. There was dancing, there were games and there were funky disco outfits – and most importantly of all there was heaps of fun! About 75 percent of students attended across the two sessions, and at the end of the night there were lots of very happy (and tired) kids. A huge thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to assist and to the Performing Arts Captains Amy and Amelia for helping with the games. A massive thank you as well to the teachers and staff who supported the event, especially Melanie on the mic and DJ Les from www.weddingspartiesanything.com.au! Events like the student disco simply can't happen without the generous support of parent volunteers and teachers. Thanks again to all for making the event such a success! Thank you, The PFA Student-led Conferences
On Wednesday 26th June 2024, we have our student-led conferences. They take place after you have received your child’s Semester 1 report and are an opportunity for you and your child to meet with the classroom teacher. Why are they called student-let conferences? The students will lead the start of the conference, showcasing their learning from Semester 1. Students in the junior grades, up to Grade 3/4, will be using the Seesaw app to show their learning journey across a range of curriculum areas. Students in 5/6 will be using Google Classroom to present their learning. Will I get a chance to talk with my child’s teacher about how they are going? Yes. Once your child has shared/presented their learning, you will have an opportunity to discuss their progress with the teacher. Be mindful that your child will be present, so please keep the conversation focused on celebrating their achievements and what their future goals may be. Students will walk away feeling much better if you focus on their strengths rather that their weaknesses. How long does the conference go for? The conference goes for 15 mins. The student component will go for around 5-7mins and you will have the remaining time to talk with the classroom teacher. Can I speak with the specialist teachers? Yes, the specialist teachers will not be taking bookings, but they will be sitting in the library, and you can drop in and visit them. You do not need to meet with the specialist teachers, but they will be available if you have any questions. How do I book a time with the classroom teacher? Bookings will be made available via the Compass app from Monday 3rd June 2024. If you have trouble booking, please contact the office. We will not be booking times for parents, but we are always happy to help ensure you can use the booking function on the app. NAIDOC Week
