Information Regarding Potential Industrial Action: March 24th
As many of you may be aware through recent media coverage, the Australian Education Union (AEU) has called for a statewide 24-hour stop-work action on Tuesday, 24th March 2026. This is a protected industrial action for union members and no staff member should be judged for their participation in a strike. There have been eight months of negotiation and no industrial agreement has been formed. Whilst there are many elements in this negotiation, the key factors are workload and pay, with Victoria’s teachers being the lowest paid in any state.

Key Information for Families:
  • 14 of our teaching staff will be taking part in the strike action.
  • 6 of our Education Support staff will also be on strike.
  • students in classes Foundation S, Year 1G, Year 1V, Year 2F, 3/4N, 3/4Y, 3/4H and 5/6A will have a normal program, though there may have to be modifications.
  • students in all other classes are not required to attend.

If this will cause you difficulties, in particular if you are a critical services worker, please get in touch as soon as possible. Please complete this online form if you need support for your child to attend school.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these logistical requirements to ensure the continued safety of our students.

Open Streets Active Travel 2026
Picture
Our Open Streets active travel initiative is back for 2026, and we are looking forward to keeping the momentum going. This program encourages students, families, and staff to walk, cycle, and scoot to school. All healthy, sustainable alternatives to driving, made possible with Merri-Bek Council’s support.

Please mark your calendars for our 2026 event dates:
  • Thursday, 19th March (First event of the year)
  • Thursday, 11th June
  • Thursday, 27th August
  • Thursday, 26th November

Sadly our usual coffee van (Thanks a Latte) are no longer available to support on the Thursdays. If you do know of another similar business that might be keen to attend the dates and sell coffee – please ask them to contact the school on 9306 9182. We’d love to establish another ongoing relationship with a coffee van for school events.

Our first event on March 19th is a perfect chance to get involved, enjoy the buzz, and promote active travel together. A massive shout-out to Prateek, Melanie, Gautam, Phil, and Wayne for your amazing work and dedication to this initiative.

Volunteer Grounds Crew: 2026 Working Bees
Join us for our upcoming working bees as we continue to spruce up our outdoor areas.

Please save the following dates for 2026:

  • Sunday, 25th October
We have a variety of tasks suited to different skillsets, including:
  • Tree pruning and green waste removal
  • Construction of new planter boxes
  • Painting of outdoor furniture
  • Spreading soft-fall mulch

A sausage sizzle will be provided for all volunteers. Students are more than welcome to attend and help out, but they must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.

Kind regards,

Michael Gill

Concert Reveal
Picture
Our students are SO excited to find out what our concert theme is going to be this year! As always, the Oak Park teachers and staff will dress up on the last assembly of the term and reveal to the students and community what the theme is! Last concert the students almost raised the roof with the excitement when they worked out that Moana Jnr was our concert theme, before that they couldn’t believe their luck that we were performing Lion King Jnr. What will be the surprise this concert year?

Concert dates are Tuesday 15th September and Wednesday 16th September. All students are required to attend both nights.

The fun is just beginning! Come and join the excitement at the final assembly of the term when the theme is revealed!

Making Waves: Our First Ever School Swimming Team Shines at Divisionals

This year marked a special milestone for our school – we fielded our very first swimming team at the Division Swimming Championships. For many schools this event is a long-standing tradition, but for us it was the beginning of something new. What made it even more impressive was how strongly our students competed against some of the most experienced and talented swimmers in the division.

From the moment our team arrived at the pool, their determination and enthusiasm were clear. Competing at this level can feel daunting, especially when racing against swimmers who train and compete regularly in clubs. However, our students embraced the challenge and showed incredible resilience in the water.

One of the most exciting highlights of the day was seeing swimmer after swimmer achieve personal best times. Every member of the team stepped up, giving their absolute best in each race. It was fantastic to see the results of their hard work and preparation paying off, and it was clear that their commitment to training had made a real difference.
Beyond the times on the scoreboard, what stood out most was the way our swimmers represented the school. They demonstrated our school values through their encouragement of one another, their sportsmanship toward competitors, and their willingness to step up and compete wherever the team needed them. They supported each other between races, celebrated each other’s successes, and showed great pride in wearing the school colours.

A special mention must go to our Under 12 Boys Medley Relay team, who delivered an outstanding performance to finish 3rd place. Their teamwork, determination and strong swimming across all four strokes made for a thrilling race and a fantastic achievement at this level of competition.

Considering this was our first ever school swimming team, the results were remarkable. The students held their own against some of the strongest swimmers in the division and represented the school with pride. Their dedication to training, early mornings in the pool, and willingness to challenge themselves truly paid off.

We are incredibly proud of all our swimmers and the way they supported one another throughout the day. Well done to all our swimmers for doing the school proud and making a splash at Divisionals!

Japanese
Over the past few weeks in Japanese, students have been developing their confidence while introducing themselves and expressing simple opinions.
Students began by learning how to greet someone politely and use the phrase ‘nice to meet you’, while also practicing respectful bowing as part of Japanese culture.
They then learned how to introduce themselves including their name and explored how to write their names in Katakana. Students enjoyed researching how their names are written and practicing correct pronunciation.
This week students have started expressing their opinions by expressing what they like.
In the coming weeks, students will continue developing this skill by asking each other questions about their likes and dislikes.
It has been wonderful to see students building confidence and enthusiasm while learning Japanese!
COMMUNITY NEWS
St Paul’s Warriors Basketball Club
Thinking about playing basketball? The local Warriors Basketball Club has over 200 players, aged from 6 to 17 - coming from many local schools including Oak Park Primary.  We are a community driven sporting organisation that is diverse and inclusive, focussing on teaching the fundamentals of basketball skills and encouraging its players to make life-long friends.

Not only does basketball offer physical development and health benefits, it provides mental & emotional growth, social & team skills, cognitive & strategic thinking, and most importantly accessibility and fun!

The best part is it doesn’t take too much time!  Only a 1-hour training session on a weeknight and a 1-hour for a game on Saturday at a local stadium.
