Principal's Column
This week, we finish our launch promotion with a focus on the learning disposition: "Is curious, finds connections between concepts and seeks the fun within Maths."

We believe that fostering a positive attitude towards maths learning involves encouraging students to be curious, explore the connections between different concepts, and find enjoyment in their mathematical journey. By understanding that great learning comes from curiosity and making connections, students can develop a deeper appreciation and enthusiasm for maths. Engaging with complex problems and seeking out the fun in finding solutions are essential parts of the learning process, leading to growth and a deeper understanding.

Teachers will be incorporating activities and discussions around this disposition in the classroom. We encourage you to support this at home by praising curiosity, celebrating the discovery of connections, and discussing the enjoyment that can be found in solving challenges. Our WOW awards this week will also focus on this disposition.

Across the rest of the year (and beyond) teachers will continue to use the language of dispositions in Mathematics, especially during investigation lessons. Thanks to the Maths Curriculum team and teaching staff for all their support this term in promoting positive maths climates in classrooms.

Upcoming Open Street Event - June 20th
Picture
I am excited to remind our community of our upcoming Open Street event on Summit Ave, scheduled for June 20th, both before and immediately after school. This event is a wonderful opportunity for our families and students to come together and enjoy the vibrant community spirit.

Reflecting on the success of our recent Open Street event, which was held in both the morning and afternoon sessions, we saw fantastic attendance and enthusiasm from everyone involved. The 'Thanks a Latte' coffee van was particularly popular, providing a much-appreciated caffeine boost for staff during the final week of term. We also have Dr Cranky’s attending on the 13th and 20th of June, offering free bike checks and repairs.

Riding, walking or scooting to school is a great way to start your day. We want to make sure every student at Oak Park Primary School can do just that, so we’ve partnered with Merri Bek City Council and charity organisation Dr Cranky’s to run a FREE School Bike Checks. Dr Cranky’s will fix bikes and if you don’t have a bike, they can provide a second-hand bike at no cost!

Their first visit this Thursday was a great success with many bikes serviced and great cheer provided by Bart and his team.

Thursday, June 20th - Dr Cranky’s returns at our Open Street event
8.30 to 9.30am and 3pm to 4.30pm
  • Another chance to bring your bike for check
  • Collect your second-hand bike ordered at the first session
Important: To help the Bike Hospital run smoothly we need parents to volunteer at each event. If you’re available to help, please email [email protected] or contact the school office.
For more information about bike riding and sustainable travel in the Merri Bek City , including, visit their website.
We can’t wait to see you there!

Kind regards,
Michael Gill

Student-led Conferences
On Wednesday 26th June 2024, we have our student-led conferences.  They take place after you have received your child’s Semester 1 report and are an opportunity for you and your child to meet with the classroom teacher.

Why are they called student-let conferences?
The students will lead the start of the conference, showcasing their learning from Semester 1.  Students in the junior grades, up to Grade 3/4, will be using the Seesaw app to show their learning journey across a range of curriculum areas.  Students in 5/6 will be using Google Classroom to present their learning.

Will I get a chance to talk with my child’s teacher about how they are going?
Yes.  Once your child has shared/presented their learning, you will have an opportunity to discuss their progress with the teacher.  Be mindful that your child will be present, so please keep the conversation focused on celebrating their achievements and what their future goals may be.  Students will walk away feeling much better if you focus on their strengths rather that their weaknesses.

How long does the conference go for?
The conference goes for 15 mins. The student component will go for around 5-7mins and you will have the remaining time to talk with the classroom teacher.

Can I speak with the specialist teachers?
Yes, the specialist teachers will not be taking bookings, but they will be sitting in the library, and you can drop in and visit them.  You do not need to meet with the specialist teachers, but they will be available if you have any questions.

How do I book a time with the classroom teacher?
Bookings will be made available via the Compass app from Monday 3rd June 2024.  If you have trouble booking, please contact the office.  We will not be booking times for parents, but we are always happy to help ensure you can use the booking function on the app.
Lunchtime Clubs
Lunchtime clubs are in full swing, and it has been great to see students enjoying the different activities in their break time.

Please see the updated timetable below.

Milo Monkey’s Birthday Party
Wow – the Foundation students had the best day celebrating Milo Monkey’s Birthday Party last week! They have worked so hard learning all the letters/sounds and Little Learners Love Literacy characters.

We started the day with a letter scavenger hunt with our Year 6 buddies. Then we played ‘secret sentence’ pass the parcel. In the afternoon we made Milo Monkey biscuit faces and a craft.

Thank you to all the families for your wonderful efforts with dress ups – we had such a fantastic day!

Science
In Science lessons this week our junior scientists have been hard at work!

In the foundation grades, students have been completing experiments in our ‘Let’s Roll’ lesson, investigating how different surfaces affect the roll motion of objects. The students also learnt about fair tests and making predictions.
Picture
In Grades 1 and 2 students worked in collaborative learning teams to plan and design a Rube Goldberg machine for a particular purpose, and to meet a design criterion.  Students drew an annotated drawing and created an equipment list to prepare for their building lesson next week. Students also had an opportunity to test out some ideas and designs for their machines.

Well done junior scientists! A week of excellent work!
