Oak Park Primary School will work collaboratively to provide a stimulating, safe and challenging learning environment that promotes resilient, innovative thinkers.
THE RED PEN
I was talking to my son, a secondary school Assistant Principal, recently. We were chatting about the differences between secondary schools and primary schools and we got on to the subject of correcting work. He had a huge pile of corrections to do that weekend and I did not envy him.
My son mentioned how sometimes the teachers got together to mark their papers and still used the red pen to do their corrections. It reminded me of the ‘feedback’ I used to get from teachers on things I had written.
The marking and grading was always done in red pen. I remember notes and strange comments that I often didn’t understand. Kids were sometimes ridiculed. Sort of, for being kids.
I remember a teacher once, just writing ‘wrong’ on my work. Why was it wrong? I didn’t know; it wasn’t explained. I was just supposed to work it out.
But I had another teacher who used to use a green pencil. It seemed to me that she read through writings looking for the good stuff. Her green comments, were things like:
“Good.” – “Yes!” – “You’ve been thinking!” – “I like this!.”
At worst she would write: “Think about this again.” or “Are you sure?” and “What about another point of view?” She raised questions to encourage me to think.
And I remember actually looking forward to getting my work back from her rather than dreading it. The other thing I remembered about her, was that she used to get us to memorise poetry. And I still remember some of that today.
She was a good teacher, who looked for the best in kids. It was great being a kid in her grade.

OPPS Fun Walk to School
Last week, the Oak Park Primary School Walking School Bus, held two "Fun Walks to School". We had the company of Simon & "The Bus" from Moreland Council, to walk along with us.
Although we had wet & cold weather, the Walking School Bus children & parents braved the elements & had a fantastic time walking to school with the inflatable bus & Simon!
We also received by way of kind donation from the Moreland Council, two hundred and fifty pieces of fruit - you would have seen these in last week's fruit provided to each classroom - thanks Anne from Moreland Council for our brain food!
Here’s what some of our regular walkers like about Walking School Bus:
The Walking School Bus runs Tuesdays & Thursdays from Loongana Ave, anyone is welcome to join. If you are interested in coming along or would like to know what it takes to start up your own Walking School Bus route (one or more days per week), please contact Stacey on 0403 598 299.
GRADE 3-6 ATHLETICS
If there are any parent helpers who could assist at the Grade 3-6 Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 28th August, we would greatly appreciate any assistance.
Please email Liam direct if you are available to assist on this day.
SCHOOL SECURITY GATES
Oak Park Primary School has a new security gate system around the school. Could we please ask everyone to ensure the gate is closed again after entering or leaving the school. This ensures everyone's safety.
OAK PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL FAMILY PORTRAIT FUNDRAISER
We are holding a family portrait fundraiser day. This is a great opportunity for your family to have a boutique style portrait session for only $20. Click here for more information.
KIDS ART WORK
Could you please encourage the art work to be returned to David Flint in the art room by no later than Monday August 19th? The order form and money is due to the front office by this date too. Your child's art work can be made into Calendar's, packs of 8 cards and sketch pads for $10. Mouse pads are $12 and diaries are $15. The PFA have discounted the prices to make these items more affordable but we will still make a small profit for the school. Thank you.
FIGHTING EXTINCTION – ZOOS VICTORIA
The 5/6’s raised a total of $830 for Zoos Victoria’s Fighting Extinction program targeted at local native animals during their projects of last term. Zoos Victoria were so impressed that they are sending out a representative to receive from us a giant cheque at assembly on Friday 30th August, where our Sustainability leaders; Leo and Hugo, will be handing over the cheque. What a super effort!
WALKING SCHOOL BUS
We do lots for sustainability at school but one of the easiest things you can do as a family is get involved in the Walking School Bus. It’s a safe, active and carbon free way to get to school. Please check in with the office if you wish to know more.
RESOURCE SMART SCHOOLS
We have been involved with Resource Smart Schools for around two years now. This is a government initiative that recognises schools for their actions in reducing the environmental impact of the operations of schools, and getting students involved in activities that targets greater sustainability. I am very happy to say we have now completed all requirements to receive our first star under their ratings system and will now move towards working on building a better environment for biodiversity on school grounds and also towards reducing the amount of landfill generated by school activities.
SPECIAL RECYCLING HUB
Please remember our special recycling hub in the foyer. We will take used batteries, plastic bottle lids, toothbrushes and empty toothpaste tubes, mobile phones, printer cartridges and CFL light globes to recycle through special services. Just drop them off in the tubs provided in the foyer. Students from 5/6A are monitoring the hub and will arrange collection/delivery when required.
School Concert – Costume List
The school is busily preparing for our bi-annual school concert that will be held at the Clocktower Theatre on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th of September. For new parents to the school, you will be relieved to know that most costumes will be provided by the school. We do however require your help with basic essentials, such as black shoes and plain t-shirts or pants. Please carefully read the attached file that has the list of all items required for each grade. Please pay particular attention to the “Parents to Provide” column so you know what you need to supply.
Black school shoes are part of our school uniform but if your child does not have black shoes K-mart have affordable pairs which are perfect for the school concert, such as black canvas lace up shoe or black canvas slip on shoe both are $3.50.
Kmart also has a large variety of plain t-shirts for approx. $4 each if your child requires a plain t-shirt for the concert item.
If you do need to supply a t-shirt for the class item we ask for your prompt action, many of these t-shirts will need a motif sewn on and we need to give the volunteer sewers time to complete this task. Please bring in the items no later than Thursday 8th August.
If you already know your child/ren will be absent from school on these concert dates please email your class teacher ASAP.
If you have any other questions regarding costumes please come and talk to Sheryl Hamilton (5/6 Resource Room) or myself and we will help you.
Thank you and please save the concert date in your calendars!
Please find the concert costume lists at the end of the newsletter
