Literacy at Oak Park Primary

The study of English is central to the learning and development of our students at Oak Park Primary School. It helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate with and build relationships with others and with the world around them.

English is broken into the three stands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Together the three strands focus on developing students' knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking and writing.

Aims
AusVELS English curriculum aims to ensure that students:
  • Learn to listen, read, view, speak, write, create and reflect on increasingly complex and sophisticated spoken, written and multimodal texts across a growing range of contexts with accuracy, fluency and purpose.
  • Appreciate, enjoy and use the English language in all it's variations and develop a sense of it's richness and power to evoke feelings, convey information, form ideas, facilitate interaction with others, entertain, persuade and argue.
  • Understand how Standard Australian English works in it's spoken and written forms and in combination with non-linguistic forms of communication to create meaning.
  • Develop interest and skills in inquiring into the aesthetic aspects of texts, and develop an informed appreciation of literature.
Oak Park Primary School recognises the importance of the partnership between home and school in nurturing the rich develop of a child's English. Families are the first and most enduring influence on a child's development and play an
important role in a child's learning.

Developing strong skills in reading, writing as well as speaking and listening is critical to ensure a child's success in early learning and beyond.
